Sony Ericsson Executives gracefully kicked off X10 Cafe at the 2nd Floor SM City Cebu last July 14, 2010. It was in this event that Sony Ericsson first launched the latest handsets in its growing Xperia™ portfolio, along with their latest mobile phones. Can you imagine how the World Wide Web would be like without bloggers? Pretty interesting question, right? The online world must be very boring without the sarcastic humor of Perez Hilton and the ingenuity of Matt Mullenweg. In short, bloggers made the cyberworld more colorful and more interesting.

3 Ways a Blogger Is Changing the World

A blogger can be someone who sits behind the desk, perhaps in a cramped room. He can also be somebody who is fortunate enough to earn a living and thus can afford a Starbucks. Most likely, however, he settles for a free blogging platform such as Wordpress or Blogger. Yet again, if he gets lucky, he may just be able to pay at least a year’s worth of domain and web host.

Regardless of the blogger’s status in life, it does not by one inch change the fact that he is contributing something to society—that, in his own way, he is shaping the world.

It is funny how misconceptions have become more adaptable these days. A lot of people think that bloggers are just self-centered individuals who have nothing best to do than to talk about themselves and their mundane activities. However, if one can just spend more time in the blogging community, he or she will realize that bloggers are not only egotists. They can also take several roles:

Critic

Bloggers have a way of putting things into different perspectives, and even if you do not necessarily believe in their cause or opinion, you know that they teach you how to be broad-minded.

Tingog.com still remains to be one of the most potent voices behind the condemnation of politicians and the growing corruption in the government. Professional Heckler’s humor and satires may not suit everybody’s tastes, but he is still well-loved because of his brutal honesty.

If it were not for websites like these, you may be stuck with truths that no longer exist. Unfortunately, there are thousands all over the world who are persecuted for just doing this one role.

Mediator

Blogs are not meant for bloggers alone. They are evolving, becoming excellent platforms for people from all walks of life to share their opinion, rant, and strong reaction on any subject or issue. And the blogger is transformed into a mediator who sees to it that everyone who dares to comment would be wise enough to be more civilized and to talk about even the most serious topics such as climate change or general elections without attacking one another.

In a way, a blogger can help in promoting peace and understanding among individuals with differing opinions. It may take a lifetime before all the wars would end, but with a firm mediation and proper guidance of bloggers, one may just learn how to give others equal chance to speak out and to respect those who may not share his or her own stand.

Journalist

A blogger is a journalist, someone who pays attention to current events and makes sure that accurate information is transmitted into cyberspace and into personal computers, laptops, or mobile phones of readers. This way, they will become more aware of the world.

And the power of blogging has never failed in the recent years. For example, the iVote, iBlog campaign spearheaded by Cebu Bloggers Society Inc. is taking a whole new spin on the term “voter’s education.” One does not have to completely rely on news advisories of government agencies such as Commission on Elections before a first-time voter learns how to operate a precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machine or before a 50-year-old nth time voter knows that he can actually look up for his precinct number online.

A few months ago, a strong typhoon by the name of Ondoy hit the Philippines, driving several thousands into the streets and evacuation centers and bringing more than 300 people into their graves. Yet blogs have helped pour out assistance from all over the world, allowing Filipinos to stand up on their feet again much faster than expected.

The death toll in the recent quakes in Haiti, Costa Rica, and China are truly heartbreaking. But blogs are teaching us to be more humane and open our eyes on our capacity to help in whatever way we can.

In the next years, there is no doubt that a blogger’s role will continue to expand, as technologies develop and more issues have to be dealt with. In the meantime, though, he feels secretly happy behind his desk, knowing that even if he is just an egotist to many, he is making a difference.

The Cebu Bloggers Society was invited by Goodyear Philippines for another event named as Goodyear Pa Rin. Goodyear Philippines continued its 111 years of safety innovation when it brought the “Goodyear Pa Rin” roadshow to Parkmall Cebu last October 16 to 18, 2009. The three-day event featured activities for the general public such as an all-day photo booth, car displays, and Women with Drive sessions conducted by Goodyear’s top racing endorsers.

Goodyear Pa Rin! opened the highly successful Women with Drive session to the public. Women with Drive, is an advocacy campaign specially designed for females to empower them with basic auto maintenance and troubleshooting skills. The session educates participants on road safety and equips them with knowledge of a vehicle’s different areas, including the engine, fluids, electrics, belts, hoses, wipers, under body and tires.

Goodyear Philippines Managing Director, Gerry Alava, stated that main objective of the free community service program is simply to provide women with the knowledge and confidence to keep their car in safe and in running order.

Goodyear shares three simple tire safety tips for every woman’s peace of mind: Inflate, Replace and Rotate.

1. Inflate

Check your tire inflation with a tire pressure gauge. Your tire pressure will ensure fuel economy and tire performance, as well as ensure a smooth ride. The right amount of air needed by your tires is specified by the car manufacturer and is shown on the vehicle door edge, door post, glove box door or fuel door. It is also listed in the owner’s manual. As a rule, check pressure when tires are cool and never let your tires go below 20psi.

2. Rotate

Goodyear recommends rotating tires every 10,000 to 12,000 kilometers to equalize tread wear – a must before putting a lot more kilometers in your tire.

3. Replace

A worn-out tire can cause accidents so make sure you replace tires when needed. Use the P5-coin test to check your tire’s wear and tear. Insert the P5 coin into the tire tread right side up. As long as the wavy line at the bottom of the coin is not exposed, your tire treads are not worn out and have adequate grip for your safe driving.

SM City Cebu Launches Free Mallwide Wifi

July 31, 2009 – SM City Cebu has given more reasons for shopaholics to regularly visit the mall. Apart from SM Cebu’s wide parking spaces and vast array of tenants, SM City Cebu is now giving wireless fidelity (wifi) access to all – FREE.

The free wifi access is another innovation in SM City Cebu’s quest to be the premier mall destination of Cebuano Shoppers. This innovation would allow shoppers with Wi-Fi capable devices to conveniently access the web wherever they are within the mall’s premises, even the carpark.

The unveiling of this new service was covered by numerous media outlets, from radio stations to print media, including the Cebu Bloggers Society (whose 2 active members Sinjin and Jose won the 1st and 2nd prizes for the Photoblog contest). The launch featured the initial free Wi-Fi access at the SM City Cebu Northwing Atrium. As of August 4, the service is already available mallwide.

The free Wi-Fi launch in SM Cebu was simultaneously launched with SM Iloilo and SM Bacolod. To date, this brings 13 SM Malls offering free Wi-Fi access since it was first initiated at SM Marikina in February. By October this year, the SM management aims to have all its 36 SM Malls in the Philippines offer free Wi-Fi access.

The free Wi-Fi access is provided by ISP PhilCom Inc. (Philippine Global Communications Inc.). The speed has capacity to serve up to 200 users all at the same time, at an amazing 8 mbps. Though the mall averages 100,000 to 200,000 daily foot traffic, not all have access to Wi-Fi enabled devices and not all accesses the web simultaneously thus connection would still be stable.

So, head now to SM City Cebu and experience the fast internet access on the go – while shopping, of course!

Review: Safari 4 Beta Browser

Ever wonder who’s getting grounds on the browser war these days!? Well, some might say Mozilla Firefox is taking the lead while in truth Internet Explorer still have the greater market share and consequently the most widely-used browser. Now I wonder what about the rest of the browsers out there? What do they have to offer?

Last week I opted to turn on what’s left of my creative juices and reviewed Safari 4’s beta browser. It took me a few good hours tweaking and testing the browser. Though I don’t have the advance tools and means to test the browser to its full capability but I knew I had covered the basics of what Safari 4 can offer.

TOP SITES

Safari 4’s Top Sites feature displays a user’s most visited sites and or bookmarked sites. Though this feature can be seen in Google Chrome but Safari displays them in 3D. You can set Top Sites as your home page or even the page you’ll see everytime you open a new tab. Just like an iPhone a user can rearrange the site’s position. The blue star displayed on any of the websites means that it has been updated since the last time you visited.

COVER FLOW

Another feature boosted by Safari 4 is the Cover Flow feature. This feature allows a user to flick through recent web pages as you do in your very own iTunes.

FULL HISTORY SEARCH

This new feature allows a user to search for pages he’s been to. The browser digs into texts of a user’s browsing history and based on the typed-in keywords it then presents a list of possibly related websites.

With Safari 4’s Full Page Zoom feature anyone can zoom in and out without worries on page layouts and quality.

Since I never had the tools to test its page load time but it feels fast, for my standards that is. Another cool new feature of Safari 4 is its support for HTML 5 which allows web applications to store information locally even without constant connection to the internet.

Well, what can I say!? With these newly unveiled features of Safari, Mozilla and Microsoft may need to step-up and be at pace with Apple Inc.

ASUS Overclocking Showdown in Cebu

Over a month ago the first overclocking event was organized in the Philippines, and CBS was there to cover the event. The event was sponsored by ASUS and hosted by Ryan Yu, the host of the TV show “TechIsland”. According to the presenters and ASUS, this is the first overclocking competition in the Philippines where teams battle each other to find out who can produce the highest clock speed with the provided hardware. The overclocking show is the main feature of the two-week Asus Ultimate PC Fair held at SM City Cebu.

Two teams composed of four computer geeks from iStorya (that’s the local community forum for Cebu) fought on who to become the best overclockers in Cebu! The teams were Cebu Xtream and Sugbo Elite. I was too engrossed with the event and the prize giving!

The following categories were part of the criteria in the ratings:

Highest % Overclock
Highest CPU Mhz
Highest Bclock
Highest memory speed (any timing)
Highest 3DMark Vantage Score
Highest Super PI

Both teams were given the chance to outperform each other with both the Intel and AMD setup. The processors used in the overclocking event included the latest Intel i7 920 (2.66GHZ) and the latest AMD Phenom Black Edition. The motherboards used were the Rampage II Gene (Intel) and the M4A79-T (AMD). Both of which are manufactured by ASUS.

During the event several prizes were given out to a number of audience members, mostly pc enthusiasts and geeks (engineering students from USC). Other prizes included case accessories, ASUS CPU coolers and more of the ASUS Xonar.

ISSUE:

Forgot Windows Administrator Password

If that’s your only problem, then you probably have nothing to worry about. As long as you have your Windows XP CD, you can get back into your system using a simple but effective method made possible by a little known access hole in Windows XP.

This method is easy enough to follow – it doesn’t require using the Recovery Console or any complicated commands. You can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair.

SOLUTION:

Here’s how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process :

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be – and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd. Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. The Licensing Agreement comes next – Press F8 to accept it.

6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically) – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.

12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.
