There are a couple of things you may not know about plastics: In 2006, the percentage of plastic wastes has just increased from less than a percent 52 years ago to close to 12 percent. The energy used in making one bottle of plastic is already enough to power a 60-watt bulb for more than 5 hours.

Hundreds of thousands of marine creatures die because of plastics in the water. Most of all, plastics are non-biodegradable. They take around a thousand years before they even start decomposing.

Simply put, allow the plastics to pile up, and you pollute the entire earth. That’s why the move of SM is none other than timely. With its launch of newly designed eco-bags last August 6, 2010, at its branch in Cebu, you will be able to make your own contribution to save Planet Earth.

The Concept

The concept of the eco-bags is very simple. Instead of carrying plastics when you go shopping, you let the sales staff put in your goodies inside the bag. This way, they don’t end up using a lot of plastics every day.

The Different Designs

The new eco-bags are slightly larger than the first version and are now available in different colors, which stand for every earth element. Dark blue is called Flow (water); orange, Spark (Fire); white, Renew (Earth); and light blue, Breathe (Air).

Moreover, for only P35.00 you don’t only get to buy any of the stylish eco-bags, but you can also donate to several projects. When you purchase Flow, you help in saving the water; Spark, conserving energy; Renew, recycling other waste materials; and Breathe, cleaning the air.

Fashionwise, the bags have been conceptualized to be hip and versatile. The stunning bright colors are gorgeous and pleasing to the eyes, while the long straps allow you to carry them like the messenger bags. You can also transform them into handheld bag.

Now who says you cannot be a fashionista-environmentalist?

Last July 30 to August 2, 2010, the mood in SM City Cebu-Northwing Atrium was festive and jubilant. Thousands of people troop not just to shop but also to purchase the hottest and personally conceptualized pair of Havaianas for their traveling feet.

Make Your Own Havaianas 2010 a couple of weeks ago was the fifth, and so far, it never failed to encourage the passion and love of the Cebuanos to this Brazilian brand. In fact, more have been added to the list every year.

The Source of Great Happiness

There are many reasons to love Havaianas. Aside from its stylish designs, it is also well-known for its comfort. However, MYOH moves the love for the brand one notch higher by allowing its die-hard fans to come up with their own concept.

Everyone who participated in the event can take home slippers with Swarovski and silver letter pins. Straps are available in wide variety of colors, and if they were just willing to be more daring, they can pick those that glow in the dark. Of course, the most unique and perhaps what is supposed to be the most picked of them all will be the commemorative pin and sole that has been designed for Filipino Havaianaticos only. These make the affair more “Pinoy,” and everyone can take home a more personalized memento.

More Are Coming

For those who were not able to catch up with the event, though, do not despair. More will surely be coming. Moreover, according to the managing director for Havaianas Philippines, Anne Gonzalez, it is their goal to make each year a better version of the previous. Now should not that be enough reason for you to get excited?

To make sure you can keep tabs on MYOH 2011, visit http://myoh.havaianasphilippines.com/. You can also check out the photos, videos, and other media files related to the affair.

Since its inception in 1979, Jewelmer, a company founded by a French perliculture specialist and a Filipino entrepreneur, has been engaged in South Sea pearl farming with the vision of creating the most lustrous pearls in the world. Thirty years later, Jewelmer continues to be the leading producer of exquisite and rare golden Palawan South Sea pearls and an active participant of international trade fairs as the prominent supplier of Palawan South Sea pearls in the world market.

The company also prides itself in being the only pearl farm company that designs and manufactures fine pearl jewelry, which is a perfect blend of European and Asian artistry and craftsmanship.

Jewelmer operates fine pearl jewelry retail boutiques located in five-star hotels and high-end commercial malls in the Philippines and has trade and retail presence in Dubai, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Paris.

Last June 23 of this year, Jewelmer unveiled the Luster For Life exhibit at the Rotunda, 1st Level Activity Center of Ayala Center Cebu, a popular shopping destination. It is part of what the company calls the “Jewelmer Experience”.

“The Jewelmer Experience engages the senses. It’s everything from the color of our showrooms, the interaction of clients with our people, our imagery, and philosophy. All of these are but a small part of the whole Experience. Its quite difficult to explain. It really should be experienced to be fully appreciated… The Luster for Life exhibit, in particular, shares our brand values in a visual and engaging way.” -Jewelmer’s Retail Manager Catrina Paulino

The Luster for Life exhibit is composed of six main panels: Palawan South Sea Pearls, Luster for Life, The Miracle of the Rare Golden Pearl, European Elegance, An Environmental Gem, and A Nation’s Pride. Each segment features a combination of vivid imagery and descriptive text. Also included in the exhibit are the actual tools used for pearl cultivation, a pearl diorama, and some unique pieces that are part of Jewelmer’s fine jewelry collections.

Luster for Life

Each Palawan South Sea pearl is composed of thousands of layers of thick, translucent, natural nacre that creates a luster that lasts a lifetime.

The Rivage des Perles Collection by Jewelmer

Jewelmer’s Palawan South Sea pearls possess an excellent luster that lasts a lifetime. Often described as an outer sheen or surface brilliance, a pearl’s luster is created when light passes through thousands of layers of nacre, the crystalline substance that makes up a pearl. Due to the translucence and thickness of the natural nacre of Jewelmer’s pearls, the end result is an excellent luster that the company has come to be known for.

The Miracle of the Golden Pearl

Jewelmer’s South Sea pearls come from the pristine marine environment of Palawan, Philippines.

Jewelmer is the only pearl producer in the world that has successfully produced pearls with a rich, natural golden color. Through decades of research and biotechnology, Jewelmer was able to perfect the breeding process that produces gold-lipped Pinctada maxima pearl oysters capable of growing large, lustrous, golden pearls. This deep, rich color can only be found in South Sea pearlsproduced in the Philippines.

The European Elegance

Inspired by nature, each piece is a product of east and west working together on such a delightful material, pearl lovers are bound to be always surprised. A team of Italian, French, and Filipino artists draws inspiration from a multitude of sources and creates exquisite designs that enhance the beauty of each pearl. These designs are then executed by highly-skilled Swiss and Filipino goldsmiths and artisans.

Exclusive to the Cebu leg of the exhibit are three South Sea pearl collector pieces: a baroque pearl strand necklace and an eagle brooch. The strand necklace is composed of 49 large, natural silvery-blue baroque South Sea pearls set with 18-karat white gold, while an irregularly shaped, large baroque South Sea pearl inspires the body of an bejeweled eagle made of gold and diamonds. Both of these one-of-a-kind pieces were part of a recently concluded international pearl exhibition held in Qatar, UAE.

An Environmental Gem

A lustrous South Sea pearl is the reflection of the health and beauty of theenvironment where it was cultivated. In the face of globally dwindling natural resources, Philippine pearl farmers give back to Mother Nature and become stewards of marine life. Thus, Jewelmer is committed to a unique kind of pearl farming: a non-extractive, environmentally sound process, which ensures that nature remains protected and unexploited.

A Nation’s Pride

The pearl is the Philippine’s national gem, the best representative of a land rich in natural resources as well as people with smiles as warm and welcoming as a golden pearl.

Finally, on October 15, 1996, former President Fidel V. Ramos concretized the pearl’s role in Philippine culture through Presidential Proclamation No. 905. The proclamation acknowledges the South Sea Pearl’s role in the country’s socio-economic & cultural tradition as well as the gem’s part in the promotion of Filipino heritage and as a support of its national development efforts.

Jewelmer continues to share the spirit of the Philippines through the warm, lustrous glow of the South Sea pearl: a true living gem and the pride of a nation.

Philippine Cuisine was greatly influenced by the Spanish colonization a long time ago. Food historians claim that 80 percent of Philippine dishes are of Spanish origin. Because the Spaniards formed the elite, dishes adapted by upper-class Filipinos were also Spanish-inspired. Thus, many of the party and fiesta dishes and those served for special occasions bear names like relleno, morcon, paella, callos, embutido, caldereta, etc.

Marco Polo Hotel, Cebu celebrated Sabores de España, for the third time already. The event was launched on July 16, 2010, and went on until July 25, 2010. It was graced by the Spain’s Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Luis Arias-Romero, and Honorary Consul of Spain, Jaime Picornell, Ms. Gema Pido and Mr. Hans Suri.

Special performances by the internationally-awarded Filipino concert pianist, Maestor Jovianney Emmanuel Cruz, accompanied by Guitarist Ruben Reyes entertained the guest during the short program. They romanced the audience with a colorful and spellbinding reportoire at the Lobby Lounge.

The ceremonial cutting of the Serrano Ham at Café Marco and unveiling of the quintessential Paella at El Viento Restaurant at Pool bar highlighted the event. The Parade of Chefs and Waiters made the event more festive.

The main event was the dinner where several Spanish food were served. Gema Luisa Pido, Cebu’s foremost authority on Spanish culinary tradition, brought out her treasured family recipes for Paella, Lengua Estofada, Cocidos, Rellenos, Croquettas, Gambas, Sans Rival, Leche Flan, and other Spanish delicacies – all becoming part of Cafe Marco’s award-winning international buffet.

“Kindred Hearts: A Musicale” is a story which depicts the values and struggles of life, friendship, family, and love. It revolves around Thomas Kent Galvez, a nursing student, who in one way or another discovers the worth of living and the importance of filial love and companionship; but as he begins to change, he unveils a predicament that entails him to make a decision that involves life and death.

The musicale premiered last December 8-13, 2009 at SM City Cebu Cinema One, co-presented and fully supported by both the Velez Nurses’ Alumni Association (VNAA) and the Association of Deans of the Philippines Colleges of Nursing – Cebu Chapter (ADPCN). The play has been fully approved by both the Department of Education (DepEd) and The Commission of Higher Education (CHED) and recognized by the Philippine Nurses’ Association – Cebu Chapter (PNA).

In connection to the success of the production, the group has decided to restage the play.
There’s a new cat in town, and they call it Coffecat. The name may sound like an international coffee brand, but if it’s humble beginnings will be traced, everyone will be surprised to know that it is a proud Philippine brand.

Coffeecat first opened its doors in May 2009 in Torres Street, Davao City. It marks yet another milestone with its second branch, in Cebu this time, at the Asiatown IT Park’s newest high-rise development, the eBloc Tower. It was on July 16, 2010 that Coffeecat made its way to Cebuanos’ hearts, promising to further enrich the highly developed coffee culture scene in this city already spoiled with choices. Coffeecat serves the pure goodness of 100% premium Arabica coffee, making it not just another brew in the City.

April Rama, Jaja Chiongbian-Rama, Cebu City Councilor Eduardo Rama and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, during the opening of CoffeeCat!

The concept for Coffeecat was fructified out of a dream of creating a new type of rendezvous – one that mixes modern, industrial, and minimalist elements yet retains a warm and cozy ambiance for good conversations, great beverages and delectable dishes. Coffeecat is a perfect stomping ground for some hearty laughters with family and friends, alone time with a good book and cup of brew, private discussions with colleagues and sweet moments with a special someone. It is a celebration of coffee and life.

CoffeeCat Cebu is 90 square meters of stylish and chic space which can accommodate a total of 60 guests with its indoor and outdoor seating combined. The café specializes in expertly handcrafted beverages made from premium coffee blend illy®, a careful balance of 9 types of pure Arabica beans from South and Central America, India and Africa which creates the unmistakable illy flavor always identical in any espresso cup, wherever it is drunk around the world; non-coffee drinks like Avalanche™ Ice Blends and its signature product – Yogo™ Premium Frozen Yogurt in Original or Green Tea Flavors.

Learn. Connect. Commit. Act. That is the general thrust of this year’s Mandaue Business Movement (MBM 2010) and also for the One Cebu Sustainability Summit 2010. After the recently concluded Mandaue Run for Life 2010, the One Cebu Sustainability Summit 2010 will be on August 9, 2010 at the Cebu international Convention Center, Mandaue City.

One Cebu Sustainability Summit 2010 will be attended by top business executives. The business summit has the theme “The Sustainable Business Revolution: A Call to Action“. The intent of the summit is to leave the participants with an understanding of what they need to do to contribute to sustainable development and the strong commitment to do something about it.

The Sustainable Business Revolution: A CALL TO ACTION!

What is this all about?

Experts agree that making the shift to a sustainable business economy is critical to the future of the Philippines and the world. Without making that leap, the environment we so cherish will continue to deteriorate at an increasingly rapid pace, which in turn will affect the quality of life for all of us. by taking on the challenge of “Becoming Sustainable”, we as a business community can reverse that trend and truly create a lasting legacy of sustainable long term growth for business, our community and the natural world around us.

Making that happen requires a “revolution” both in thinking and in action on the part of business leaders throughout the world. In this first of a series of summits, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be hosting in 2010 and 2011, you as an attendee will have a unique opportunity to join that revolution and build a sustainable business legacy or your company, you community, and our country.

What will I get if I join this event?

LEARN why sustainability is so important and what you need to do to make the transformation in you own business.

CONNECT with major business leaders who have made the leap to sustainability and who can help you with your own challenges, as well as with other attendees around you who may provide unique partnership opportunities going forward.

COMMIT to specific steps you company needs to take to move into this new world of sustainable business.

ACT on the first of those steps you just committed to, so that when you go back to your company afterwards you are already moving toward your long-term goals.

Who should attend?

CEOs and other Senior Executives within corporations, Senior Government Policy Managers, Investment Executives, Educational Leaders and members of Business Support Organizations.

Varied talks from Environment, Technology, Energy, Business, Social Development and to Advocacy given by prestigious speakers! Like: ALex Lacson, Antonio Meloto, Jr. and many more!

One Cebu Sustainability Summit 2010 is organized by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce & Industry and in partnership with the Province of Cebu, Mandaue City and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Selling original records has become quite a struggle for the music industry, especially when almost everything can be easily accessed on the internet for free.

“Music is now ill in Cebu.” says Sonic Boom Music Producer and famous band manager, Alex “Phat Boy” Lim during the TeeDee Press Conference held at the Outpost Restobar last July 17, 2010. He asserted that truly, everything changes-even music, and perhaps, there will come a day that nobody will buy original albums. “It’s not shocking to know some countries having no music albums sold. Our country will somehow be one of them but that is not today. We all should rely on the progress of time on when to adapt the new trend of music playing.”

Halfway through last year, we at SONIC BOOM noticed an unmistakable trend in our audience’s consumer behaviour – our CDs were not moving as much as our band shirts were. We knew for a fact this wasn’t indicative of how they valued our artists because they do pay a considerable amount to get into our events, and they also patronize our bands religiously. We also knew that it was no coincidence that this happened at a time when torrents, piracy, e-radio and other free digital media were proliferating.

So much goes into preparing an album. Any band will tell you that. To invest that much time and resources into something that competes with free media just did not seem logical. We knew that we needed to come up with something that would showcase our artists, spread their music, and most importantly, give the fans more value for their purchase. Hence the TeeDee – Hear and Wear.

Photo: Clarence Mongado

Sonic Boom comes up with a new avenue for bands who want to have albums. Not just plain albums- albums that will ‘click’. As remembered, last summer, Sonic Boom officially announced that they are now a music and label company.

As for Sonic Boom, TeeDee is the solution of the predicament of Cebu’s Music Industry. The name says it all: TeeDee. A t-shirt with a CD. The philosophy behind the TeeDee is simple: More bang for your buck.

Why you should buy one:

Affordable: For only Php500, you get a high-quality shirt and great music from bands you love.

Art+Music: The TeeDee also opens an awesome new avenue for musicians and artists to collaborate. Renowned art-scene superstars creating pieces inspired by a specific band’s sound — music you can see.

Fit: There are 5 sizes to choose from! Our sizing is based on numbers, making Size 1 the smallest (XS) and Size 5 the largest (XL). Special sizes are also available by order.

Music: Let the band give you a unique aural experience: three tracks, handpicked by the band for your listening pleasure. As if that were not enough, the lyrics of the single are printed inside the shirt in the vocalist’s handwriting; along with autographs of all the members.

Limited: You will own a collector’s item! We like to keep things unique, because we know you do. We limit our production of TeeDees per batch.

The bands featured as the first batch now being produced in TeeDee are the following with their album title and the shirt designer name.

December Avenue “Time To Go” – Curious Wiji
Gasulina “Risk Addicted” – Nick Automatic
The Line Divides “Don’t Let It Go” – Burito Machine
Subscapular “Telefication” – Alex Pelayo
Salaman “Soldiers of the New Age” – Bunny Pasig

Sony Ericsson Executives gracefully kicked off X10 Cafe at the 2nd Floor SM City Cebu last July 14, 2010. It was in this event that Sony Ericsson first launched the latest handsets in its growing Xperia™ portfolio, along with their latest mobile phones. There was the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10 mini and the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10 mini pro, which has been labelled as the world’s smallest Android smartphones in terms of height x width as of April 28, 2010.

The Xperia™ line of handsets brings consumers the best communication and entertainment experiences, delivered in a collection of smartphones to give consumers choice in size and style.

The X10 mini has dimensions of 3.2 by 1.9 by .63 inches, while the X10 mini pro with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard is 3.5 by 2.05 by .67 inches. Both are approximately the size of a credit card, but are bursting with numerous features. As Google Android smartphones, the duo can be customized with directly downloadable applications fromAndroid Market™.

Last July 21, 2010, Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort celebrated its 21st anniversary, dubbed as “Coming Together at 21″.

Maribago Bluewater is one of the most popular and top-class beach resorts here in Central Visayas. It is located at Mactan Island, Lapulapu City, Cebu. Being on its 21st year of existence in providing a world class and quality accommodation and vacation services to its locals and foreign tourists is indeed, something to be proud of!

Consul Arcadio Alegrado, Chairman of the Board of Bluewater Resorts and Hotels Management, Inc., welcomed everyone to the celebration. On behalf of his wife and children, who are now running the resort, he extended his gratitude to those who made Maribago Bluewater what it is today. It was then followed by an audio-visual presentation called “Moving Forward”, made by Maribago Bluewater General Manager Rhyz Buac.

What started out as a weekend getaway resort for the Alegrado family, 2 million patrons have passed through and 1 million guests have stayed at the Maribago Bluewater since it opened its doors on July 21, 1989. “Having been with the resort for 20 years, I personally saw how this simple beach property evolved into this lush paradise.” says Mr. Buac.

How has Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort changed through the years?

Maribago Bluewater started with only 40 employees. Now, they have more than 350 of which 9 of them have been there since the very beginning!

Maribago Bluewater started with a land area of 2 hectares. Now, it has grown to 7 hectares.

Maribago Bluewater started with only 32 rooms. Now, they have 158 rooms and suites.

Maribago Bluewater’s Beach and Garden Wing Rooms have been updated with a contemporary Filipino look.

Maribago Bluewater has renovated and added restaurants, including the new Molto Italiano and Cove – which is arguably the best live seafood restaurant in Cebu.
