Cebu Media Excellence Awards 2013 was made public two years ago with the goal of being a platform to recognize media practitioners who do exceptional work in their chosen field.

Globe Telecom thought of ideas in making this event worth commemorating, so they’d coincide Cebu Media Excellence Awards 2013 with the Cebu Press Freedom Week celebrated every 3rd week of Septmeber.

Cebu Press Freedom Week was an event organized to celebrate our freedom from the Martial Law era. In response to this freedom, Globe Telecom organized Cebu Media Excellence Awards 2013 to promulgate excellence in civic, explanatory and investigative journalism.

After the chains of Martial Law, Globe Telecom has stood beyond its wrath as a forerunner of freedom and expression.

The company Globe Telecom as we know it can be traced back when Act No. 3495 was approved by the US Congress in 1928. The Act gave Robert Dollar Company to own a wireless long-distance message service in a then-US Commonwealth territory, the Philippines.

After being franchised, it was renamed as Globe Wireless Limited, serving the nation until World War 2 came and closed its operations.

Brought back to life in 1965 as Globe-Mackay Cable and Radio Corporation (GMCRC), its services were offered once again to the nation until another struggle would interrupt its operations, the Martial Law.

The dark days of Martial Law hindered the company for 8 years until in 1980, a new grant was given to open their franchise.

Cebu Media Excellence Awards 2013 Brainchild

EDSA People Power broke the chains of tyranny in 1986 and gave thought to Globe as a company to stand tall in promoting the rights of every man and to keep the light of freedom alive.

Freedom of the Press lost its power but eventually got it back in 1986.

Globe Telecom has already joined Cebu Press Freedom Week for quite some time already.

Only a few private institutions support press freedom and Globe is one of the few who value the significance of sustaining, boradening, and defending its cause.

“We cannot overemphasize the critical role of the media not only in their daily coverage of events but also in shaping the minds of the society on important issues. The Cebu Media Excellence Award seeks to further enhance active participation of the press in pushing for social and civic concerns as our country moves towards economic development,” enthuses Globe Telecom’s Corporate Communications head, Yoly Crisanto.
