McDonald's Philippines and DOLE Cebu Strengthen SPES alliance for the Youth

McDonald’s

McDonald’s has always been inspiring Filipinos all over the nation and has decided to continue its affiliation with Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES).  The aim of SPES is to provide employment assistance to out of school and indigent youth in Cebu.

The partnership of McDonald’s Philippines and DOLE was initiated in March 2012 by the Republic Act 7323 and 9547 which stimulates students to persevere their education by obtaining employment.  The subsequent RA 8759 was responsible for the creation of Public Employment Service Office (PESO) with main responsibility of assisting recipients from provinces, other cities and vital locations to receive working for a living.

“We at McDonald’s understand the need for programs like these – we want to help in providing a brighter future for the youth, especially for those who find it difficult to do so.  With SPES, McDonald’s Philippines and DOLE are bound by the common goal of giving the Filipino youth labor opportunities that enable them to fund their education and have a more positive tomorrow to look forward to,” shares Chona Torre, McDonald’s Philippines Vice President for Human Capital Group.

SPES facilitates students to receive employment from partners in the economic sector.  McDonald’s recognized their call and offered more than 3,600 positions for students to become crew members.

More or less 100 students have already been with SPES in McDonald’s last year.  22 of them are presently undergoing training to be part of their regular staff due to their commendable job.  Because of the success of this program in Cebu, McDonald’s is looking forward to charter more than 300 beneficiaries within this year in batches of 3 from March to December.

“Each student will be with us for 52 days, earning the salary that can help support their education,” shares Torre.  The responsibilities of the SPES grantees are to maintain restaurant cleanliness, to prepare desserts and beverages, and to administer aid to the local marketing group during various happenings or McCelebrations.

“We are very happy with the program, especially because we have been given the opportunity to work with DOLE.  This partnership is a key driver in enabling us to broaden our reach, and to expand our efforts to be able to provide more employment opportunities for the youth,” Torre of McDonald’s enthuses.
